Death certificate: Boston bombing suspect died of gunshot wounds, blunt trauma to head, torso

BOSTON - A suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings died from gunshot wounds and blunt trauma to his head and torso, a funeral director said Friday.

Funeral home owner Peter Stefan has 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev's body and read details from his death certificate. The certificate cites Tsarnaev's "gunshot wounds of torso and extremities" and lists the time of his death as 1:35 a.m. on April 19, four days after the deadly bombing, Stefan said.

Tsarnaev died after a gunfight with authorities who had launched a massive manhunt for him and his brother, ethnic Chechens from Russia who came to the United States about a decade ago. Police have said he ran out of ammunition before his younger brother dragged his body under a vehicle while fleeing.

Tsarnaev's family on Friday was making arrangements for his funeral as investigators searched the woods near a college attended by 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was captured less than a day after his brother's death.

The funeral parlour is familiar with Muslim services and said it will handle arrangements for Tamerlan Tsarnaev, whose body was released by the state medical examiner Thursday.

The body initially was taken to another funeral home, where it was greeted by about 20 protesters.

Stefan, owner of Graham Putnam and Mahoney Funeral Parlors, said everybody deserves a dignified burial service no matter the circumstances of his or her death and he is prepared for protests.

"My problem here is trying to find a gravesite. A lot of people don't want to do it. They don't want to be involved with this," said Stefan, who said dozens of protesters gathered outside his funeral home, upset with his decision to handle the funeral. "I keep bringing up the point of Lee Harvey Oswald, Timothy McVeigh or Ted Bundy. Somebody had to do those, too."

Meanwhile, two U.S. officials said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told interrogators that he and his brother initially considered setting off their bombs on July Fourth, American Independence day.

As part of the bombing investigation, federal, state and local authorities were searching the woods near the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus, where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was a student. Christina DiIorio-Sterling, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, could not say what investigators were looking for but said residents should know there is no threat to public safety.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was found hiding in a tarp-covered boat in a suburban Boston backyard, faces a charge of using a weapon of mass destruction to kill. Three of his college classmates were arrested Wednesday and accused of helping after the bombing to remove a laptop and backpack from his dormitory room before the FBI searched it.

The April 15 bombing, using pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails, ball bearings and metal shards, killed three people and injured more than 260 others near the marathon's finish line.

The brothers decided to carry out the attack before Independence Day when they finished assembling the bombs, the surviving suspect told interrogators after he was arrested, according to two U.S. officials briefed on the investigation. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.

Investigators believe some of the explosives used in the attack were assembled in Tamerlan Tsarnaev's home, though there may have been some assembly elsewhere, one of the officials said. It does not appear that the brothers ever had big, definitive plans, the official said.

The brothers' mother insists the allegations against them are lies.

Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security ordered border agents to immediately begin verifying that every international student who arrives in the U.S. has a valid student visa, according to an internal memorandum obtained Friday by The Associated Press. The new procedure is the government's first security change directly related to the Boston bombings.

The order from a senior official at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, David J. Murphy, was circulated Thursday and came one day after President Barack Obama's administration acknowledged that one of the students accused of hiding evidence, Azamat Tazhayakov, of Kazakhstan, was allowed to return to the U.S. in January without a valid student visa.

Tazhayakov's lawyer has said he had nothing to do with the bombing and was shocked by it.

A benefit concert featuring Aerosmith, James Taylor and Jimmy Buffett is scheduled for May 30 at the TD Garden in Boston. The proceeds will go to The One Fund, which has taken in more than $28 million for those injured and the families of those who were killed.

The fund's administrator, Kenneth Feinberg, said Friday he plans to hold meetings with victims next week and begin cutting checks by the end of June.

Mystery LG handset leaks out with no physical buttons

Mystery LG Phone

Evleaks offers first glimpse of buttonless LG phone with unique earpiece

Prolific leaker Evleaks has posted images of what could be a future LG handset. The device, pictured on Facebook, shows a spartan front face with only an LG logo down below. There's also a curved glass front and an unusual looking reflective earpiece. In today's post, the leaker offers a guess that this might be the rumored Optimus G2.

The mystery phone seems to share some design cues with the Nexus 4, but there's no suggestion at all that this is a Nexus device -- for one, LG's branding is very much front and center. But it could indicate a change of tack for LG, if it's to join the likes of Motorola and Sony with a push towards on-screen buttons. (It's a move that would please Android purists.)

For the moment that's about all we can surmise from an image showing a featureless phone with a blank screen. If you've got any theories of your own, be sure to shout out in the comments. The original image is linked below, as is a close-up of the bezel.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? The death toll from the collapse of a shoddily built garment-factory building in Bangladesh continued its horrifying climb, reaching 580 on Sunday with little sign of what the final number will be.

It has been well over a week since the April 24 disaster, but each of the last several days has seen 20 or so bodies pulled from the mangled concrete, and sometimes much more than that.

The disaster is likely the worst garment-factory accident ever, and there have been few industrial accidents of any kind with a higher death toll. It surpassed long-ago garment-industry disasters such as New York's Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire, which killed 146 workers in 1911, and more recent tragedies such as a 2012 fire that killed about 260 people in Pakistan and one in Bangladesh that same year that killed 112.

Bangladesh's $20 billion garment industry supplies retailers around the world and accounts for about 80 percent of the impoverished country's exports. The collapse has raised strong doubts about retailers' claims that they could ensure worker safety through self-regulation.

Government officials say substandard building materials, combined with the vibration of the heavy machines used by the five factories, led to the collapse.

The building developed cracks a day before the collapse and the owner Mohammed Sohel Rana called engineer Abdur Razzak Khan to inspect it. Khan appeared on television that night and said he told Rana the building should be evacuated.

Police also issued an evacuation order, but witnesses say that hours before the collapse, Rana told people that the building was safe and garment factory managers told their workers to go inside.

Rana has been arrested is expected to be charged with negligence, illegal construction and forcing workers to join work, crimes punishable by a maximum of seven years in jail. Authorities have not said if more serious crimes will be added.

Khan was arrested as well. Police said he worked as a consultant to Rana when three illegal floors were added to what was supposed to be a five-story building.

The government promised to make the garment industry safer after the November garment factory fire that killed 112 people, saying it would inspect factories for safety and pull the licenses of those that failed. That plan has yet to be implemented.

Bangladesh is popular as a source of clothing largely because of its cheap labor. The minimum wage for a garment worker is $38 a month, after being nearly doubled this year following violent protests by workers. According to the World Bank, the per capita income in Bangladesh was about $64 a month in 2011.

Gaming Commission Hears from Area Towns, Casino Applicants ...

Hopkinton and Medway have expressed strong concern that the state is not adequately protecting communities near proposed resort casino sites. The comments, made to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, as part of a public hearing?on its proposed process for evaluating resort casino applications,?were released Friday.

In addition, state Sen. Karen Spilka, state Rep. Carolyn Dykema and Rep. Jeffrey Roy ? whose districts include Holliston, Hopkinton, Ashland, Franklin and Medway ? have sent a letter that expresses concern about the communities' access to expertise to evaulate the proposal for Milford, and a commission timeline that could compress the review.

Foxwoods Massachusetts, which is seeking a license for a resort casino near I-495 in Milford, did not submit comments at the public hearing on the proposed Phase 2 regulations, held at three locations in Massachusetts. The regulations include descriptions of the process for applicants to submit their final proposals, and the process for addressing development impacts on host towns and surrounding communities.

Both of the competitors for the resort casino license in the greater Boston region ? Wynn Resorts and Suffolk Downs/Ceasars Entertainment ? submitted feedback in writing.

In a 14-page letter, Hopkinton through attorney J. Raymond Miyares criticized 61 aspects of the proposed regulations. In particular, the town said the regulations rely on the casino applicants to decide which communities will be designated under the law as "surrounding communities," which gives the town greater status in the review and access to funds to evaulate the development impacts.

"Section 125.01(a) continues to provide that a city or town will qualify as a surrounding community if it is so identifed in [a Phase 2] application," Miyares said. "Hopkinton previously commented that this section should be eliminated because it creates a perverse incentive: to limit the number of cities and towns that are discussed in the ... application. The town is dismayed that the commission kept this incentive in place."

Hopkinton wants all cities and towns within 5 miles of a proposed casino to be automatically designated as surrounding communities.

Medway, through its Board of Selectmen chairman, said the town had reached out to the developer of the Milford casino and received no acknowledgment.

"... Leading us to conclude, as time continues to pass, that the applicant designation avenue is more likely than not being foreclosed upon for us and other prospective surrounding communities in the region," wrote Andrew Espinosa, chairman of the Medway Selectmen.

The regulations do not adequately address the surrounding communities' ability to finance the research and studies that would be required to evaulate the anticipated impact of the casino, Espinosa wrote. And if no money is made available by the developer ahead of its filing the Phase 2 application, the towns' only option would be to finance its own studies.

"The proposed language that would give the Commission latitude to exceed the $50,000 for potential disbursements in Community Disbursements, ... is not helpful to towns that have made no progress in communication with the developer," Espinosa wrote. "And such funds that may be available to prospective surrounding communities 30 days following the execution of a host agreement is still too late for Medway to prepare an acceptable response to the commission concerning impacts."

The so-called Phase 2 applications can be made by developers once they pass an initial state review that looks at their financial backgrounds and business histories, and once they have negotiated a host agreement with the site town. Completed applications have to address 57 elements, and show proof that the community has supported the project in a referendum vote.

The state's background investigations into developers and their financial backers began in late January, and is considered the Phase 1 process.

Under Phase 2 applications, developers need to demonstrate they "have thought broadly and creatively about creating an innovative and unique gaming establishment" that provides a "significant and lasting benefit to the residents of the host community, the surrounding communities, the region and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts."

Fifty-seven elements have to be addressed by developers, including:

  • a copy of the host community agreement, ?which includes provisions for a community impact fee.
  • information demonstrating how the developer will address impact and mitigation concerns.
  • a listing of the infrastructure costs of the host town resulting from the construction and operation of a casino, and a statement to commit to a "community mitigation plan."
  • proof of a positive vote in the host town in a referendum on the casino.
  • a list of the communities, or community, the developer believes to be a "surrouding community."
  • information explaining how the applicant will address surrounding community impacts.
  • a description and documentation of public outreach efforts made to local communities.
  • clear and convincing evidence of financial stability, including tax returns and other reports filed by government agencies and personal accounting check records and ledgers.

PFT: Seahawks owner Allen has identity stolen

vincelombardiGetty Images

The ongoing debate about how a gay NFL player would be treated in the locker room has largely focused on the idea that times are changing, and that acceptance of a gay player would be a modern development. But it?s often overlooked that the ultimate example of the old-school football coach was also perfectly fine with having gay players on his team.

Multiple players who played for Vince Lombardi, the legendary former Packers and Redskins coach, say that he knew some of his players were gay, and that not only did he not have a problem with it, but he went out of his way to make sure no one else on his team would make it a problem.

In 1969, Lombardi?s Redskins included a running back named Ray McDonald, who in 1968 had been arrested for having sex with another man in public. In the Lombardi biography When Pride Still Mattered, author David Maraniss writes that Lombardi told his assistants he wanted them to work with McDonald to help him make the team, ?And if I hear one of you people make reference to his manhood, you?ll be out of here before your ass hits the ground.?

Lombardi?s daughter Susan told Ian O?Connor of ESPNNewYork.com that her father would have been thrilled to have a player like Jason Collins, the NBA center who publicly revealed this week that he is gay.

?My father was way ahead of his time,? Susan Lombardi said. ?He was discriminated against as a dark-skinned Italian American when he was younger, when he felt he was passed up for coaching jobs that he deserved. He felt the pain of discrimination, and so he raised his family to accept everybody, no matter what color they were or whatever their sexual orientation was. I think it?s great what Jason Collins did, because it?s going to open a lot of doors for people. Without a doubt my father would?ve embraced him, and would?ve been very proud of him for coming out.?

Dave Kopay, the first former NFL player to come out, also played on those 1969 Redskins, and he says that while he never told Lombardi, he believes Lombardi knew not only that Kopay was gay, but that Kopay and another Redskins player, Jerry Smith, were in a romantic relationship.

?Lombardi protected and loved Jerry,? Kopay told O?Connor.

Lombardi?s brother Harold was gay, and when Harold died in July of 2011 he was survived by his partner of 41 years ? meaning their relationship began just before Vince died in September of 1970. As noted by Doug Farrar of Yahoo! Sports, Vince knew Harold was gay and didn?t just believe in ?tolerance? but believed strongly that discrimination against gay people was wrong, just as he was angered when he saw mistreatment of his black players, or discrimination against his fellow Italian-Americans.

If a coach who was considered old-fashioned even by the standards of the 1960s accepted gay players in his locker room, the idea that gay players couldn?t be accepted in an NFL locker room in 2013 is both silly and sad.

What Google Fiber Means to Small Businesses

google fiber

Recently, Google announced the third city that will receive its super fast Internet service. Provo, Utah, will be the third home to Google Fiber, with most residents connected to the grid by the end of this year.

?Once connected, Provo will be one of the first cities in the world where access to broadband will flow like water or electricity,? Kevin Lo, general manager of Google Fiber said.?Kansas City and Austin, Texas are the two other cities slotted to receive the ultra-fast Google Internet.

Google Fiber is Google?s new ultra-fast Internet service. The cities chosen to receive this service will have access to 1 Gigabit, 100x faster than normal broadband. Google is also offering free broadband service in those areas for a simple $30 installation fee.

Well, Google seems to be targeting areas with lesser known, but thriving tech scenes.

?Utah is already home to?hundreds of tech companies and startups, and many of them are based in Provo,? Google?s Kevin Lo?wrote?in a blog post. ?In fact, the Provo area?ranks second in the nation?in patent growth, and is consistently ranked as?one of the top places to live and do business?in the US. We believe the future of the Internet will be built on gigabit speeds.?

Local companies such as Trafficado are excited about the growth that Fiber will bring to the Provo area.?Austin, Texas, is also known as a hub for technology and innovation:

?Access to more bandwidth is like rain in Texas ? it?s good for everyone,? said David Bresemann, senior vice president and chief product officer at Silicon Laboratories Inc., a locally based semiconductor company, in Statesman. ?Austin?s tech-savvy residents and businesses have an insatiable appetite for higher bandwidth.?

Google?s targeting of areas that already have growing startup and tech scenes will bring even more growth to these areas.

Why would businesses care about being part of Google Fiber?

It?s the next big thing and any chance to be on board at the beginning is a good thing. Plus, with fast Internet you can get things done more quickly. This is especially enticing for SaaS businesses and any company looking to quicken their uploading and downloading processes.

It is not known where Google will be taking Fiber next, but they are set on expanding and making this the future of the Internet.
