Child abuse experts say psychological abuse can be as damaging to a young child's physical, mental and emotional health as a slap, punch or kick.

While difficult to pinpoint, it may be the most challenging and prevalent form of child abuse and neglect, experts say in an American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) position statement on psychological maltreatment in the August issue of the journal Pediatrics.

Psychological abuse includes acts such as belittling, denigrating, terrorizing, exploiting, emotional unresponsiveness, or corrupting a child to the point a child's well-being is at risk, said Dr. Harriet MacMillan, a professor in the departments of psychiatry and behavioural neurosciences and pediatrics of McMaster University's Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and the Offord Centre for Child Studies. One of three authors of the position statement, she holds the David R. (Dan) Offord Chair in Child Studies at McMaster.

"We are talking about extremes and the likelihood of harm, or risk of harm, resulting from the kinds of behavior that make a child feel worthless, unloved or unwanted," she said, giving the example of a mother leaving her infant alone in a crib all day or a father involving his teenager in his drug habit.

A parent raising their voice to a strident pitch after asking a child for the eighth time to put on their running shoes is not psychological abuse, MacMillan said. "But, yelling at a child every day and giving the message that the child is a terrible person, and that the parent regrets bringing the child into this world, is an example of a potentially very harmful form of interaction."

Psychological abuse was described in the scientific literature more than 25 years ago, but it has been under-recognized and under-reported, MacMillan said, adding that its effects "can be as harmful as other types of maltreatment."

The report says that because psychological maltreatment interferes with a child's development path, the abuse has been linked with disorders of attachment, developmental and educational problems, socialization problems and disruptive behaviour.

"The effects of psychological maltreatment during the first three years of life can be particularly profound."

This form of mistreatment can occur in many types of families, but is more common in homes with multiple stresses, including family conflict, mental health issues, physical violence, depression or substance abuse.

Although there are few studies reporting the prevalence of psychological abuse, the position statement says large population-based, self-report studies in Britain and the United States found approximately eight-to-nine per cent of women and four per cent of men reported exposure to severe psychological abuse during childhood. The statement says pediatricians need to be alert to the possibility of psychological abuse even though there is little evidence on potential strategies that might help. It suggests collaboration among pediatric, psychiatric and child protective service professionals is essential for helping the child at risk. Funders for the paper's development included the Family Violence Prevention Unit of the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Along with MacMillan, the statement was prepared by Indiana pediatrician Dr. Roberta Hibbard, an expert on child abuse and neglect; Jane Barlow, professor of Public Health in the Early Years at the University of Warwick; as well as the Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Child Maltreatment and Violence Committee.

Tips For Succeeding With Your First Web Based Business

When you set up your first online business, you have a wide variety of concerns. Quite a few businesses never make it past the initial stages because the make one or more fatal errors early on. There?s no doubt that getting a new business off the ground takes some effort and a thick skin. You will make mistakes regardless of how much you learn and plan. However, your mistakes will be fewer and less painful because you learned and planned ahead.

If you are just getting your feet wet in this business, then you have to be very careful about what you buy such as make money products and the like. You know yourself that you need to watch out for those who will gladly rip you off. Always know who you are about to give your money to, and not know personally but do research on them. Forums for online business can really be a lifesaver for the novice since you can learn from mostly honest people. Gaining knowledge about the proper sequence and topics worthy of consideration is essential.

One way to run your ads that can work well is renting a little spot on another site for your ads. All you do here is make a nice banner and rent a little bit of space somewhere on the site.

Banner ad creation is pretty simple, but if you are lazy or whatever you can hire a freelancer for it. You will need to find a good script that will keep tabs on the click through rate so you know how well it is performing. You can outsource the placement too if you want, or what many do is contact the sites directly. You can have to most expensive and highest quality tools for doing anything, but if you are not competent with using them then your results will be substandard.

You can choose any technique to illustrate this, like social commissions, and that is just a, for instance. Some people do things better than you and many do it worse; so we think it is a great idea to want to do it the best ? pass them all.

It all begins with awareness about your self and what you do in your business, and that awareness can actually cause you to implement positive changes for the better. We have often felt that there are a hundred little things that all work in unison to do something amazing like cause people to pay you money for something.

If you are familiar with testing and tracking, then you have a very good idea that the small pieces we mentioned are what you test with any type of campaign.

A lot about marketing on the net is imprecise, and that means you will find divergent ideas. You can observe that in just about any forum, and in the end you have to make the best call you can about the point of contention. One area of debate and some discussion concerns the use of video for content versus the traditional use of plain text. The bottom line with this depends on who is in your audience, and you will find that some prefer either one, or both. Minimize assumptions as much as you can because that is usually where mistakes come from in your marketing.

The best way to find out about all these promotion techniques is to use Google or go to the forums. One thing about traffic that you must understand and abide by at all times is you only want what is called targeted traffic, and that refers to visitors who are only from your particular niche.

The reason that is so is due to the interest level in what you are promoting, and it really is that simple. All traffic that is not targeted to your niche will result in a waste of time and money.

Former Leighton mayor loses cancer battle

ONE of the town?s most popular leading figures, who has spent years forging links between Leighton-Linslade and Europe, has lost his long battle against cancer.

Former mayor, town and district councillor, Chris Hincliff, of Bassett Court, Leighton, died on July 19 at the Florence Nightingale Hospice, Aylesbury. He was 66-years-old and his wife, Christine, was by his side.

This week his family, former colleagues and friends paid tribute to the father of three who kept alive the town twinning ideal by representing the town at events in Germany and France.

His wife, who he met in 1968 and married two years later, said: ?We was just the most fantastic guy. I thought the world of him and I will miss him terribly although I know that he is still with us.?

Chris was an active member of the town?s Liberal Democrats and served as both a town councillor, becoming mayor in 1999 for a year, and a district councillor on the now defunct South Beds Council.

It was during his time with Leighton-Linslade Town Council that he became interested in the burgeoning town-twinning initiative and eventually became the chairman of the twinning committee, taking parties from Leighton over to the twin towns of Titisee Neustadt and Coulommiers and hosting return visits by families and community leaders.

Chris was responsible for launching the popular farmers? markets, was a former chairman of the governors at Mary Bassett Lower and Vandyke Upper Schools, had been district treasurer of the Scouts and Scout leader of the Trinity group and was the former president of the Leighton Buzzard branch of the Royal British Legion. He was also a member of the Royal Observer Corps.

The funeral will be at All Saints Church, Leighton, this Thursday at 2.15pm followed by a private cremation. Family flowers only but donations may be made, via Dillamores, to the Florence Nightingale Hospice.

A full obituary appears in this Tuesday?s LBO.

Mitt Romney's Israel Speech puts him at odds with Obama: Calls Jerusalem "the capital of Israel"

GOP Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney called Jerusalem "the capital of Israel" in a speech he delivered in Israel--which he called the "start-up" nation. Romney, in calling Jerusalem the capital in his Sunday remarks positioned himself at odds with the Obama administration--and previous U.S. presidents as he waded into a sensitive Israeli/Palestinian issue.

Affirming the U.S. position about the Israeli capital--as recently as Thursday--White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a statement, "The status of Jerusalem is an issue that should be resolved in final status negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. We continue to work with the parties to resolve this issue and others in a way that is just and fair, and respects the rights and aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians."

While the Israeli government is headquartered in Jerusalem, the embassy of the U.S. and dozens of other nations--Canada and Great Britain for example-- in Israel is in Tel Aviv.

Click below for the text of Romney's speech.

President Barack Obama and Romney are battling for Jewish votes in battleground states--where the shift of a few votes--Jews overwhelmingly backed Obama in 2008--may make a difference. My column on Romney, Obama and Israel is HERE.

the lede: "President Barack Obama launched a preemptive strike Friday -- in advance of Romney's visit to Israel -- by signing a law to strengthen Israel's security and to provide an additional $70 million for its Iron Dome missile defense system."

MITT ROMNEY DELIVERS REMARKS IN JERUSALEM

Boston, MA - Mitt Romney today delivered remarks to the Jerusalem Foundation in Jerusalem, Israel. The following remarks were prepared for delivery:

Thank you for that kind introduction, Mayor Barkat, and thank you all for that warm welcome. It's a pleasure and a privilege to be in Israel again.

To step foot into Israel is to step foot into a nation that began with an ancient promise made in this land. The Jewish people persisted through one of the most monstrous crimes in human history, and now this nation has come to take its place among the most impressive democracies on earth. Israel's achievements are a wonder of the modern world.

These achievements are a tribute to the resilience of the Israeli people. You have managed, against all odds, time and again throughout your history, to persevere, to rise up, and to emerge stronger.

The historian Paul Johnson, writing on the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Jewish state, said that over the course of Israel's life, 100 completely new independent states had come into existence. "Israel is the only one whose creation can fairly be called a miracle," Johnson wrote.

It is a deeply moving experience to be in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel.

Our two nations are separated by more than 5,000 miles. But for an American abroad, you can't get much closer to the ideals and convictions of my own country than you do in Israel. We're part of the great fellowship of democracies. We speak the same language of freedom and justice, and the right of every person to live in peace. We serve the same cause and provoke the same hatreds in the same enemies of civilization.
It is my firm conviction that the security of Israel is in the vital national security interest of the United States. And ours is an alliance based not only on shared interests but also on enduring shared values.

In those shared values, one of the strongest voices is that of your prime minister, my friend Benjamin Netanyahu. I met with him earlier this morning and I look forward to my family joining his this evening as they observe the close of this fast day of Tisha B'Av.
It's remarkable to consider how much adversity, over so great a span of time, is recalled by just one day on the calendar. This is a day of remembrance and mourning, but like other such occasions, it also calls forth clarity and resolve.

At this time, we also remember the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches who were massacred at the Munich Olympics forty years ago. Ten years ago this week, 9 Israeli and American students were murdered in the terrorist attack at Hebrew University. And tragedies like these are not reserved to the past. They are a constant reminder of the reality of hate, and the will with which it is executed upon the innocent.

It was Menachem Begin who said this about the Ninth of the month of Av: "We remember that day," he said, "and now have the responsibility to make sure that never again will our independence be destroyed and never again will the Jew become homeless or defenseless." "This," Prime Minister Begin added, "is the crux of the problems facing us in the future."

So it is today, as Israel faces enemies who deny past crimes against the Jewish people and seek to commit new ones.

When Iran's leaders deny the Holocaust or speak of wiping this nation off the map, only the na?ve - or worse - will dismiss it as an excess of rhetoric. Make no mistake: the ayatollahs in Tehran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object, and who will look the other way.
My message to the people of Israel and the leaders of Iran is one and the same: I will not look away; and neither will my country. As Prime Minister Begin put it, in vivid and haunting words, "if an enemy of [the Jewish] people says he seeks to destroy us, believe him."
We have seen the horrors of history. We will not stand by. We will not watch them play out again.

It would be foolish not to take Iran's leaders at their word. They are, after all, the product of a radical theocracy.

Over the years Iran has amassed a bloody and brutal record. It has seized embassies, targeted diplomats, and killed its own people. It supports the ruthless Assad regime in Syria. They have provided weapons that have killed American soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. It has plotted to assassinate diplomats on American soil. It is Iran that is the leading state sponsor of terrorism and the most destabilizing nation in the world.

We have a solemn duty and a moral imperative to deny Iran's leaders the means to follow through on their malevolent intentions.

We should stand with all who would join our effort to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran - and that includes Iranian dissidents. Do not erase from your memory the scenes from three years ago, when that regime brought death to its own people as they rose up. The threat we face does not come from the Iranian people, but from the regime that oppresses them.
Five years ago, at the Herzliya Conference, I stated my view that Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons capability presents an intolerable threat to Israel, to America, and to the world.
That threat has only become worse.

Now as then, the regime's claims that it seeks to enrich nuclear material for peaceful purposes are belied by years of malign deceptions.
Now as then, the conduct of Iran's leaders gives us no reason to trust them with nuclear material.
But today, the regime in Iran is five years closer to developing nuclear weapons capability. Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority.
I want to pause on this last point. It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from securing nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.
The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers. History teaches with force and clarity that when the world's most despotic regimes secure the world's most destructive weapons, peace often gives way to oppression, to violence, or to devastating war.
We must not delude ourselves into thinking that containment is an option. We must lead the effort to prevent Iran from building and possessing nuclear weapons capability. We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is our fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. We recognize Israel's right to defend itself, and that it is right for America to stand with you.

These are some of the principles I first outlined five years ago. What was timely then has become urgent today.

Let me turn from Iran to other nations in the Middle East, where we have seen rising tumult and chaos. To the north, Syria is on the brink of a civil war. The dictator in Damascus, no friend to Israel and no friend to America, slaughters his own people as he desperately clings to power.

Your other neighbor to the north, Lebanon, is under the growing and dangerous influence of Hezbollah.

After a year of upheaval and unrest, Egypt now has an Islamist President, chosen in a democratic election. Hopefully, this new government understands that one true measure of democracy is how those elected by the majority respect the rights of those in the minority. The international community must use its considerable influence to ensure that the new government honors the peace agreement with Israel that was signed by the government of Anwar Sadat.

As you know only too well, since Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, thousands of rockets have rained on Israeli homes and cities. I have walked on the streets of Sderot, and honor the resolve of its people. And now, new attacks have been launched from the Sinai Peninsula.

With Hezbollah rockets aimed at Israel from the north, and Hamas rockets aimed from the south, with much of the Middle East in tumult, and with Iran bent on nuclear arms, America's vocal and demonstrated commitment to the defense of Israel is even more critical. Whenever the security of Israel is most in doubt, America's commitment to Israel must be most secure.

When the decision was before him in 1948, President Harry Truman decided without hesitation that the United States would be the first country to recognize the State of Israel. From that moment to this, we have been the most natural of allies, but our alliance runs deeper than the designs of strategy or the weighing of interests.
The story of how America - a nation still so new to the world by the standards of this ancient region - rose up to become the dear friend of the people of Israel is among the finest and most hopeful in our nation's history.

Different as our paths have been, we see the same qualities in one another. Israel and America are in many respects reflections of one another.
We both believe in democracy, in the right of every people to select their leaders and choose their nation's course.

We both believe in the rule of law, knowing that in its absence, willful men may incline to oppress the weak.

We both believe that our rights are universal, granted not by government but by our Creator.

We both believe in free enterprise, because it is the only economic system that has lifted people from poverty, created a large and enduring middle class, and inaugurated incomparable achievements and human flourishing.

As someone who has spent most of his life in business, I am particularly impressed with Israel's cutting edge technologies and thriving economy. We recognize yours as the "start-up nation" - and the evidence is all around us.

You have embraced economic liberty. You export technology, not tyranny or terrorism. And today, your innovators and entrepreneurs have made the desert bloom and have made for a better world. The citizens of our countries are fortunate to share in the rewards of economic freedom and in the creativity of our entrepreneurs. What you have built here, with your own hands, is a tribute to your people, and a model for others.

Finally, we both believe in freedom of expression, because we are confident in our ideas and in the ability of men and women to think for themselves. We do not fear open debate. If you want to hear some very sharp criticisms of Israel and its policies, you don't have to cross any borders. All you have to do is walk down the street and into a caf?, where you'll hear people reasoning, arguing, and speaking their mind. Or pick up an Israeli newspaper - you'll find some of the toughest criticism of Israel you'll read anywhere. Your nation, like ours, is stronger for this energetic exchange of ideas and opinions.

That is the way it is in a free society. There are many millions of people in the Middle East who would cherish the opportunity to do the same. These decent men and women desire nothing more than to live in peace and freedom and to have the opportunity to not only choose their government but to criticize it openly, without fear of repression or repercussion.

I believe that those who oppose these fundamental rights are on the wrong side of history. But history's march can be ponderous and painfully slow. We have a duty to speed and shape history by being unapologetic ambassadors for the values we share.

The United States and Israel have shown that we can build strong economies and strong militaries. But we must also build strong arguments that advance our values and promote peace. We must work together to change hearts and awaken minds through the power of freedom, free enterprise and human rights.

I believe that the enduring alliance between the State of Israel and the United States of America is more than a strategic alliance: it is a force for good in the world. America's support of Israel should make every American proud. We should not allow the inevitable complexities of modern geopolitics to obscure fundamental touchstones. No country or organization or individual should ever doubt this basic truth: A free and strong America will always stand with a free and strong Israel.

And standing by Israel does not mean with military and intelligence cooperation alone.

We cannot stand silent as those who seek to undermine Israel, voice their criticisms. And we certainly should not join in that criticism. Diplomatic distance in public between our nations emboldens Israel's adversaries.
By history and by conviction, our two countries are bound together. No individual, no nation, no world organization, will pry us apart. And as long as we stay together and stand together, there is no threat we cannot overcome and very little that we cannot achieve.
Thank you all. May God bless America, and may He bless and protect the Nation of Israel.

For the employee business ethics training is even more important

Is even more important for the employees of business ethics training. If you start early, and give a good sense of ethics within your employees or as an employee cultivate those ethics in yourself, you can be sure then in a company that is not fraud and fraudulent processes victims to work

Many people wonder if business ethics a slogan, is that lately around thrown we was, by some of the aggressive tactics have seen as we enter the 21st century. What needs to be done is for more people to brush up on their ethics, to companies, refer to to make sure that they work with a high moral code of conduct. Business ethics training comes in two forms-one for the employer and one for the employee. A good sense of what kind of ethics are required for the employer as a business owner is required because the owner is the one who makes all final decisions. They need a good leader and a representative of that strong moral and ethical ideology, if you go, expect somebody who has the same from its employees.

It is important that you time, develop your own ideology solid companies, in connection with ethics. Consider the fact-every day there are certain ethical codes in the business, be, violated even by people who otherwise upright and outstanding citizens been. As a three-up seemingly honest man can one day something stupid, and endanger the company, or even schlimmer? get thrown in jail?

It was because they developed a good ethical one, did not have that you can get with the right training. To keep this kind of training a valuable resource, if you want to build a strong foundation and the business environment.

Home Staging: Making Your Home Sellable | Real Estate Home ...

You may have already read the importance of clearing out clutter. Well, that?s because it can?t be stressed enough. It is one of the most important aspects of making your home appealing to buyers, for two reasons. First, not just papers and dishes, clutter includes decorations and furniture too. Too much of it can block a persons view of the house itself. If everywhere they look they see stuff, a buyer doesn?t see your home. It is imperative that they have a clear view, or they won?t want to buy. Second, all that clutter screams personality. Your personality. And this is not what a buyer wants to see. When someone is looking over a home, what they need to do in order to be motivated to buy is to imagine themselves living in that home. If the house is so full of the current owner, a potential buyer can?t get past that and make the mental leap to visualizing themselves in the home.

Make Your Home?Sell?With Home Staging

Because of this, some sellers choose to box up a lot of their personal goods and put them in professional storage. This gets it right out of the house, so even the boxes aren?t clogging up the spare rooms and closets, which are also important selling features.

It is also important to fix things around the home. Keep in mind how well the doors around your home work, as buyers will almost always open closets and cupboards. If the doors are sticky or squeak, that gives a bad first impression. Obviously, your front door is the first candidate for a good hinge-oiling.

While you certainly don?t want to enter into major renovations, a new coat of paint can really brighten up a home and make it more appealing. Consider both the outside and inside of your home. And as tempting as it is to choose trendy colors or things you are personally attracted to, neutral tones are best. White or off-white are your safest bets as they will help a home appear bright, and give a new owner a good base if they wish to paint the home more uniquely.

Speaking of a bright home, be sure to leave all the lights on when your home is being shown. Open all the curtains, too, so that viewers feel that your home is bright and welcoming, and they can see clearly. Dusting every surface also helps your home look brighter.

Consider smell, an important sense that impacts our first impression. Do a good deep cleaning, especially if you have pets or smoke indoors. Air the home out a bit and you may wish to install some air fresheners, but be sure not to choose anything too overwhelming, as more and more people are sensitive to scents.

Good luck with showing your home!

The move was made for safety reasons, said Nicolas Messner, a federation spokesman. Judo involves grabbing opponents' clothing and using choke holds, making the head scarf ? or hijab ? "dangerous," he added.

Messner told the Associated Press that negotiations are ongoing with the Saudi Arabian delegation to find a compromise. But neither the Saudis nor the athlete,?Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani, has yet made a statement about whether she will compete. She and Sarah Attar ??a middle-distance runner who grew up in California but has dual citizenship ? are the first two women ever to represent Saudi Arabia at the Olympics, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had to lobby hard to persuade Saudi Arabia to send them.

For the first time in Olympic history, all 205 nations have sent both men and women to the Summer Games.?

The decision is sure to stoke controversy. The IOC is determined to promote women's sport in Islamic countries, where most sporting authorities refuse to let women participate without a hijab. Moreover, other sporting federations, including those overseeing international soccer, taekwondo, and even rugby, allow for hijabs. Advocates say new, tear-away sport hijabs fastened by Velcro eliminate the threat of injuries.

But some in the judo community say their sport is a unique case. The judo robe, or judogi, is central to the sport, both as tradition and as an element of the competition. Many moves involve clutching an opponent's judogi in order to throw her. Women are allowed to wear a T-shirt under their judogi, but adding a head scarf is different, say some.

"It was always going to be a no-no here," said Stewart Brain, head coach of the Australian judo team, to the Sydney Morning-Herald.?Because it's up around the neck," he said, "you could get your finger in there and tear it off."?

"At the end of the day it doesn't fit for safety reasons," Mr. Brain added.?

In making the stand, however, the International Judo Federation is moving against the tide in international sports.

The International Weightlifting Federation lifted a ban on clothing restrictions last year, allowing a team from the United Arab Emirates to compete in hijabs. This month, the international soccer federation, FIFA, approved the wearing of head scarves. It had banned them in 2007, also for safety reasons. The ban resulted in Iran having to forfeit one qualifier for the London Olympics after several women refused to remove their head scarves.

In other countries, it discouraged some Muslim women from dreams of playing for the national team.

"I strongly believe that the ban is just outright discrimination," Assmaah Helal, who plays in a women's league in Australia, told AFP.?"At an international and an elite level, sports like taekwondo and rugby allow the head scarf to be worn during competitive matches, and for the world game, for the universal language that is football, to ban the head scarf ... it doesn't make sense."

Even within judo, the wearing of hijabs is not unprecedented. The Asian judo federation has allowed women to compete with hijabs.

With?Shahrkhani seen as a means of accelerating broader cultural acceptance of women in sport in Saudi Arabia, the decision to ban hijabs could have broader consequences. In a country where women cannot go to men's sporting events and are forced to form underground leagues to play soccer, what "this participation does is break a taboo and break a barrier," Christoph Wilcke, a Saudi researcher at Human Rights Watch, told US News and World Report.??

"I don't think that will lead to concrete changes led by the Saudi government," he said.?"What I think it will do, it will increasingly encourage women in Saudi Arabia to take matters into their own hands, which they're doing already."

Shahrkhani is scheduled to compete on Aug. 2 in the heavyweight (over 78 kilogram) event. ?

Funds will advance joint project to treat spinal cord injury

Irvine, Calif., July 26, 2012 Efforts to begin human clinical trials using stem cells to treat cervical spinal cord injury in the U.S. received a $20 million boost Thursday, July 26, from the state's stem cell research funding agency, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

The award will be shared by Aileen Anderson and Brian Cummings, associate professors of physical medicine & rehabilitation at UC Irvine's Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center, and Nobuko Uchida of StemCells Inc. in Newark, Calif. Anderson and Cummings proved that transplanting human neural stem cells discovered and developed by Stem Cells, Inc. into rodents with thoracic spinal cord injury could restore mobility. The CIRM award announced Thursday will fund the collection of data necessary to establish human clinical trials in the U.S.

"Our therapeutic approach is based on the hypothesis that transplanted human neural stem cells integrate into the injured spinal cord to repair the protective myelin sheath and spinal circuitry," Anderson said. "Any therapy that can partially reverse some of the effects of spinal cord injury could substantially change the quality of life for patients by altering their dependence on assisted living and medical care."

CIRM's governing board on Thursday gave authorized $150 million for eight teams at five institutions statewide. The projects backed are considered critical to the institute's mission of translating basic stem cell discoveries into clinical cures.

"CIRM's support for UC Irvine's efforts to advance novel stem cell-based therapies for a variety of diseases is extremely gratifying," said Peter Donovan, director of the university's Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center. "This latest award for spinal cord treatment holds great promise. We are delighted."

About 1.3 million Americans suffer chronically from spinal cord injuries. In California, nearly 147,000 individuals are living with such damage, which can severely impair the movement, sensation and autonomic function of otherwise healthy people. Recovery from spinal cord injury is often limited, even after aggressive emergency intervention with steroids and surgery, followed by rehabilitation.

"That's crushing for anyone," Anderson noted. "It's very tough for patients and their families. We believe stem cell therapies could provide significant functional recovery, improve quality of life and reduce the cost of care for those with spinal cord injury. That's our goal."

Anderson's and Cummings' laboratory has a long history of collaboration with StemCells Inc. in addressing spinal cord injury, including studies that led to the world's first clinical trial of a neural stem cell therapy for chronic spinal cord injury. This Phase I/II clinical trial, currently under way in Zurich, recently reported positive safety data from the first cohort of treated patients and continues to enroll subjects.

"We are very encouraged by the preliminary results in these volunteers" Cummings said, "and we are excited to receive CIRM funding to enable us to extend this approach to those with cervical injuries and to patients in the U.S."

House drought bill keeps $5 billion subsidy targeted by reformers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Farmers would get another round of the $5 billion a year "direct payment" subsidy, targeted by reformers as wasteful spending, in a Republican-drawn offer of disaster aid for farmers hurt by the worst drought in half a century.

The package, unveiled on Friday, combines drought relief with a one-year extension of the farm program. If passed by the House next week and accepted by Senate, it would end a farm-bill stalemate by deferring work until 2013, when cost-cutting pressure may be intense.

An estimated $1.2 billion in drought relief would be provided under the bill, half to livestock producers and half to crop growers. While crop insurance will provide a safety net for many growers, livestock producers face parched pastures and rising feed costs.

The direct payment, paid to cotton, grain and soybean growers regardless of need, was marked for elimination in farm bills in the House and Senate this year. Budget hawks and environmentalists said the direct payment is wasted money, considering the farm sector enjoys boom times and the huge federal deficit.

An advocate for small farmers, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, called for the House to "vote down this dirty extension bill." The bill would cut soil and water conservation programs while keeping the direct payment, it said.

Two-thirds of the continental United States is under moderate to exceptional drought and 40 percent of U.S. counties are listed as agricultural disaster areas. The worst drought conditions since 1956 fueled demands for Congress to act.

House Agriculture Committee chairman Frank Lucas said the package responded to "devastating drought conditions afflicting most of our country" and, by extending the 2008 farm law expiring on September 30, would end any doubts about the farm program for the new crop year.

Collin Peterson, the Democratic leader on the committee, said he opposed an extension unless it was a vehicle for a speedy compromise on a successor to the 2008 law that expires on Sept 30. There is virtually no way for Congress to meet that deadline without resorting to unusual parliamentary methods.

House Republican leaders are sitting on a $491 billion farm bill that was approved by Lucas' committee earlier this month because it faces strong opposition. Majority Leader Eric Cantor says the Senate-passed farm bill is unacceptable.

The Senate bill could save $23 billion over 10 years compared to $35 billion in the House bill. The House bill would raise crop support prices by up to 40 percent while the Senate would eliminate almost all traditional farm subsidies and, instead, compensate growers for low prices and poor yields.

Food stamps for the poor would be cut by $16 billion in the House farm bill, the largest cuts since the 1990s. Democrats want to eliminate the food stamp cuts while some Republicans want deeper cuts throughout the farm bill.

The disaster bill would revive disaster programs that share feed cost for livestock producers and compensate them for animals killed by drought as well as programs to assist fruit, vegetable, tree and fish farmers. The so-called SURE program for crop growers also would be extended.

On Thursday, Senate Agriculture Committee chairwoman Debbie Stabenow said she was ready to make a legislative sprint and complete a new, full-scale farm bill. "If Congress does what Congress always does and kicks the can down the road with a short-term extension, there will be no reform, direct payments will continue, we'll lose the opportunity for major deficit reduction and we'll deliver a real blow to our economic recovery," said Stabenow.

Gene fusion is behind deadly brain cancer

Treatment for a lethal form of brain cancer could be on the horizon after the discovery that the cancer can be formed by two genes fusing together. People with the disease could potentially benefit from drugs that block the activity of a protein produced by this wayward fusion.

Cancers can be sparked by a number of genetic mutations, including disruptions to single parts of a gene that either over-stimulate or castrate an important protein. But some cancers arise when two entire genes are accidently fused together during natural cell replication. The protein that the fused genes code for performs some of the functions you would expect of it but does so in new locations or contexts. "They do their thing, but incorrectly," says Anna Lasorella at the Institute for Cancer Genetics at Columbia University, New York.

Lasorella and her colleagues studied the genes involved in a lethal form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. About 3 per cent of the glioblastoma tumours they looked at were caused by the fusing of two genes.

On its own, each gene has an important but benign function. When fused together the two wreak havoc during cell division. The protein that the fused genes code for latches onto the spindles that pull freshly replicated chromosomes into two new cells during cell division. The interference means that instead of an even division, the cells end up with different numbers of chromosomes: a phenomenon known as aneuploidy. "It's a well-known hallmark of cancer," says Antonio Iavarone, also at Columbia.

Having identified this mechanism, the team wanted to check that the fused genes actually cause this form of cancer. So they injected the newly formed protein into the brains of healthy mice. Ninety per cent of the mice went on to develop the expected glioblastomas.

The team then administered a drug that blocked the activity of the new protein. In doing so, they were able to double the mice's survival time.

Because the protein is specific to the cancer cells, the team predicts that drugs to target it would cause minimal damage to healthy cells.

Pet Tips: Bathing Your Pet ? Eagle Hardware Farm & Ranch

Pet Tips: Bathing Your Pet

grooming tips for pet 220x300 Pet Tips: Bathing Your PetThough your pets may not always happily cooperate, there are plenty of times when they will need a good bath. Cats in particular are notorious for disliking a bath. Many people find it is easier to take their cat to the groomer for clipping and bathing and, at the very least, regular grooming and/or haircuts make it easier to give baths at home between trips to the salon.

For a successful bath at home, the trick is to get them in and out of the tub without major incident. It is wise to acclimate your pet to the bathing process early on so that things are easier down the road. Two people can also make the process run a lot smoother. Here are some helpful tips.

Pre-Wash

  • If your pet has received a flea treatment prior to the bath, you should wait 48 hours before bathing. Trim your pet?s toenails before you try to hold a wet slippery dog or cat in the bathtub, sink or large container (such as a kiddie pool if your pet is very large). If you expect a lot of fur to go down the drain, use a mesh sponge by the drain to capture extra fur washed off your pet. Brushing beforehand also helps reduce the amount of hair the drain will need to handle.
  • Brush out any mats in your pet?s fur prior to getting the hair wet.
  • Toss towels in the dryer so they are warm when you start to towel off your pet. You will be surprised at how much of a difference this makes in getting your pet completely dry.
  • Keep the shedding to a minimum by using warm instead of hot water, which can trigger your pet to shed a lot of fur at once.

The Wash

  • For extra furry pets, try diluting shampoo with water to make application, lathering and rinsing easier. Use an empty shampoo bottle and make a solution of one part shampoo to 10 ? 15 parts warm water. Having it prepared before you start the bath keeps all of your attention on your pet in the tub.
  • Many pets are fearful of the water as it comes directly out of the faucet or showerhead. Use a pitcher or large cup to pour water over them instead.
  • Remember to close the door to the bathroom just in case your pet gets out of the tub and tries to escape.
  • Be careful while working around the eyes and ears. If your pet doesn?t like water poured on its face, bathe the body and then use a wet washcloth to wipe down the head and face.

Post-Wash

  • Check your pet?s ears, making sure they are dry and odor-free after bathing. This can prevent an ear infection. Water from the bath can be just the trigger to allow yeast or bacteria in the ear to grow out of control. Use your finger and a tissue to check that the ear is in good shape after your pet is dry. Avoid putting anything smaller than your finger into your pet?s ear so you don?t damage the ear canal or the eardrum. Talk with your vet about proper ear cleaning techniques and products. Never stick a cotton swab down into a pet?s ear, as you are likely to rupture an eardrum, leading to pain as well as disturbances in balance.
  • Blow dryers can speed up the drying process for pets that are cooperative. Work on getting your pet used to the blow dryer. Short sessions can go a long way toward helping your pet get comfortable with the blow dryer so future drying-time is reduced. Don?t use the hot setting and never blow the dryer directly toward your dog?s or cat?s eyes. Also, continually move the blow dryer to different areas of the body. The blow dryer can burn the skin if kept in one area for an extended period of time.
  • After the bath, medium- and longhaired pets need a good brushing to remove any loose hair or fur. If you need a little extra assistance, consider trying a de-shedding tool.

?KimKierkegaardashian? Twitter feed blends wisdom of reality TV star and existential philosopher

Kim Kardashian (Joe Kohen for Motorola/AP)The existential philosopher S?ren Kierkegaard once wrote that, "to love God is to love oneself truly." Conversely, reality TV star and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian once said, "It doesn't matter if you have a valentine or not - just love yourself and be your own."

And now, the two inspirational voices have come together in one amazing Twitter feed, titled KimKierkegaardashian. The account is only a few weeks old but has already accumulated more than 26,000 followers. Each of the account's tweets contains the self-described, "philosophy of S?ren Kierkegaard mashed with the tweets and observations of Kim Kardashian."

Some recent observations include, "Good morning Miami! Here everything lies naked and visible before God, and consciousness has nowhere to hide."

And this offering from July 20, "I scarcely recognize myself. My mind is like a turbulent sea. I was testing new mascara!"

Or this July 18 entreaty on modern beauty: "Botox, to me, doesn't even count as plastic surgery. But out of his own nervousness, man is always eager to point out his neighbor's faults."

For the record, here are Kardashian's real-life Twitter feed and the account of Justin Buber, which describes itself as, "Combining the pop stylings of Justin Bieber with the existential wisdom of philosopher Martin Buber."

Inflatable heat shield could be used to land humans on Mars, NASA says

After its successful test launch of the Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment 3, NASA says that this technology could be used to land humans on Mars.

NASA successfully tested an inflatable heat shield prototype Monday (July 23), a technology that could one day be used for future space exploration missions, including landing humans on Mars, its builders say.

The Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment 3, or IRVE-3, was conducted at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va. During the test flight, a small capsule was launched atop a suborbital rocket, and an inflatable heat shield was deployed in space before it plummeted back through Earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speeds to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean.

The demonstration flight helps pave the way for new re-entry systems on future spacecraft, said Neil Cheatwood, IRVE-3 principal investigator at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.

"As far as the applicability of the technology, [we were] originally motivated to do this to allow us to potentially land more masses at Mars," Cheatwood said in a press briefing after Monday's successful test flight. "Mars is a very challenging destination. It has a very thin atmosphere ? too much of an atmosphere to ignore, but not enough for us to do the things we would at other planets. That was our motivation about nine years ago when we started doing this stuff."??[Photos: NASA's Inflatable Heat Shield for Spaceships]

Since the inflatable heat shield is designed to withstand hypersonic speeds and extreme temperatures, the IRVE-3 technology could give mission managers more options for where to land future spacecraft or rovers on Mar, such as touching down at higher latitudes on the Red Planet.

"We want to go to higher latitudes at that mass, or use this technology for larger payloads, such as humans," Cheatwood explained.

The heat shield technology could also be used to tackle the issue of "garbage" on the International Space Station, Cheatwood said. Robotic spacecraft that are sent to deliver fresh supplies, food and experiments to the orbiting outpost could then be re-packed with unwanted materials to return to Earth.

"When we send up re-supply [spacecraft] to the station, there's no portable on-demand storage up there," Cheatwood said. "When they bring up 'x' number of cubic feet of stuff, we need to get rid of that much as well."
