American Legion: Colonial Heights Post 284 scored seven runs in the fifth inning to beat Gloucester Post 275 8-4 in an elimination game in the junior state tournament at Glen Allen Stadium. Gloucester, which finished 2-2 in the tournament, scored twice in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead and added two more runs in the sixth.

Saturday, Gloucester scored five runs in the sixth inning to eliminate Martinsville Post 42 8-4.

Coastal Plain League: Saturday, Martinsville scored three runs in the ninth inning to rally past Peninsula 4-3 at War Memorial Stadium.

The Pilots, (33-21 overall, 19-8 in the second half), lost their third straight game, but will be the East Division?s second seed in the Petitt Cup tournament, which begins Wednesday.

Peninsula?s opponent in the best-of-three series has not been determined yet.

International League: Norfolk hit a season-high five home runs in its 9-0 win over Charlotte at Harbor Park.

Yamaico Navarro, Xavier Avery, Zelous Wheeler, Jason Pridie and Eric Thames went deep for the Tides (59-56), who are one game behind Pawtucket for the league?s wild-card berth.

Freddy Garcia and Mark Hendrickson combined for the four-hit shutout.

Eastern League: Tyler LaTorre hit a three-run home run to help Richmond beat New Hampshire 8-3 at The Diamond.

Can We Just Talk About America's Funniest Home Videos For A Minute?

Groundbreaking essays and eloquent commentaries have almost certainly been written on this issue, but I'm just looking for some real talk. Can we all agree that nothing new has really happened since the cultural moment that produced America's Funniest Home Videos? I mean sure the devices we're using to film our dumbassery are more powerful and ubiquitous. And yeah we don't have to go through Bob Saget to get them out there anymore. But the way we use all those camera apps, Vine and now Google Glass seems so eerily similar to what people instinctually began pointing their camcorders at in the 80s.

Woods shoots 70, coasts to 8th win at Bridgestone

AKRON, Ohio (AP) ? They say par is a good score in a major.

If that's true next week at the PGA Championship, then Tiger Woods has already done his share of preparation.

Woods played safe and smart with a big lead, parring 16 holes in an even-par 70 Sunday to coast to a seven-shot victory at the Bridgestone Invitational for his eighth win at the event ? matching the PGA Tour record he already shared for victories in a single tournament.

"As blustery as it was, it was going to be really hard for someone to shoot 62 or 63," Woods said. "If I didn't give any shots away and played my game and shot even par or better, I'd force these guys to go and shoot something super low on a golf course that wasn't going to give it up under these conditions."

As he walked to the scorer's trailer to finalize his score, he scooped up 4-year-old son Charlie, who hugged him tightly as his father strode past the large gallery wildly cheering his landslide victory.

"This is the first win he's ever been at," Woods said. "That's what makes it special for both of us."

Daughter Sam was on hand when Woods, won the U.S. Open in 2008, before his personal life imploded. Now Charlie will have some memories of dad in the winner's circle.

"They always say, 'Daddy, when are you going to win the tournament?' It was a few years there, or a couple years, I hadn't won anything," Woods said, smiling. "'Are you leading or not? That's a stock question. 'Not leading.' 'Well, are you going to start leading?' 'Well, I'm trying.'"

After a second-round 61 in which he flirted with 59, Woods ended up at 15-under 265 to easily beat defending champ Keegan Bradley and Henrik Stenson.

Bradley, a huge fan of Tiger's when he was a youngster, was asked if he liked to see Woods dominate like he did a decade or so ago.

"When I was younger, I did," Bradley said. "You know, I hate to sit here and go on and on about how good he is, but he is. It's difficult because I really want to get up there and contend with him. But he's just ... this week he's playing really well."

Woods' mastery at Firestone Country Club allowed him to again match Sam Snead's PGA Tour record for wins in an event. Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open eight times. Earlier this year, Woods won at Bay Hill for the eighth time.

As if he weren't already the favorite next week in the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, the lopsided victory reinforced it.

No one ever got within six shots all day of the world's No. 1.

When he had a good shot at a pin, he took it. Otherwise, he took few, if any, risks.

He birdied the 10th hole, then offset that with a three-putt bogey at the 14th hole. But by then most of the field was thinking about catching flights to Rochester instead of catching Woods.

Bradley, who won a year ago when Jim Furyk double-bogeyed the 72nd hole, shot a 67 to get to 8 under along with Stenson, who had a 70 while playing with Woods.

"He kind of punctured this tournament on Friday," Stenson said. "He did what he needed to do today."

Tied for fourth were Cleveland-born Jason Dufner (71), Miguel Angel Jimenez (69) and Zach Johnson (67) at 6 under. Bill Haas and Chris Wood each shot a 71 and were at 5 under, with Martin Kaymer, who matched the day's best round with a 66, at 4 under along with Furyk, Richard Sterne and Luke Donald.

For those betting Woods won't win next week at Oak Hill, keep in mind that he has already won both the Bridgestone and the PGA Championship in the same year three times in his career (2000, 2006, 2007).

Still, the odds do not favor him coming right back with another win. In the 19 times in which he has won his last start before a major, he's only followed up with a win four times: 2000 U.S. Open (after winning The Memorial), 2001 Masters (Players), 2006 PGA (Buick) and 2007 PGA (Bridgestone).

The victory was Woods' 79th on the PGA Tour, drawing him within three of Snead's record 82 triumphs.

"The total body of work is pretty good," Woods said. "One of the things I'm proud of, obviously, is how many times I've won, plus won World Golf Championships and how many years I've won five or more tournaments in a season. What is it, like eight or nine times? Ten? That's not bad, either."

Lest anyone think he'll have difficulty surpassing Snead's total, consider that Woods is over 10 years younger (he's 37?) than Snead was when he won his 82nd and final event, the 1965 Greater Greensboro.

Even though he's a California native, Woods has found a second home in Ohio where he has 13 victories ? five at the Memorial Tournament.

Woods won the Bridgestone, and it's forerunner the NEC Invitational, about every way imaginable: overcoming a crazy shot that went onto the clubhouse roof, putting out in almost total darkness, running away early, outdueling a foe down the stretch.

Woods, who has five wins this year to have at least that many in a year for the 10th time, also has won 18 World Golf Championship series events in just 42 starts.

Really, he won the tournament in the rain Friday.

The 61 he had in the second round ? he needed to go just 2 under over the final five holes to shoot a magical 59 ? matched his career best, mustered three previous times including once before at Firestone.

In the two previous times he won the Bridgestone and then played in the PGA Championship, he finished first at Southern Hills in 2007 and then placed second ? blowing a final-round lead to Y.E. Yang ? in 2009 at Hazeltine.

He's far from a lock next week, however.

Woods has not won in his last 17 starts in a major, calling into question his shot at surpassing Jack Nicklaus' record 18 victories in majors. Woods has 14 ? and all eyes will be on him as he heads to Pittsford, N.Y.

Among those watching him will be the defending champion.

"The second-round 61 was phenomenal," 2012 PGA Championship winner Rory McIlroy said. "He does well on every course he plays, but he comes back to a few courses on tour that he seems to really excel at.

"And, obviously, this is one of them."

Bankers welcome China clampdown

Senior bankers are looking on the bright side of last month?s clampdown by China on the shadow-banking sector, saying it underscores Beijing?s newfound enthusiasm for rebalancing and liberalizing the economy.

Bankers struck a bullish note on the volatility, citing the upside to the newly aggressive regulatory stance as Beijing adopts a twin strategy of forcing lenders to improve liquidity and asset-liability-matching practices in the short term while paving the way for greater financial liberalization.

"The small banks were getting too aggressive in their activities with trust companies and in the shadow-banking system, more generally," says Jaspal Bindra, Standard Chartered?s chief executive for Asia. "The Chinese authorities provided a message to these players: don?t take the liquidity for granted and you can only take leverage to a point."

The PBoC?s rare, though short-lived, tolerance for volatile money-market rates underscores its commitment to liberal reforms, says Bindra. However, markets are likely to take fright in the process, given the lack of policy transparency, as the PBoC needs to constrain credit growth to private lenders without abruptly repricing the large liability base of heavily controlled state lenders, he says.

Sustainability

Bindra adds: "The question is: could they have done it in a more gradual way over a sustained period? In any case, the Chinese authorities achieved their goals, and we are not talking about large insolvencies ? this is more about fears that returns on investments will be impaired over time. Clearly, the Chinese government is caught in a dilemma: they want sufficient credit out there but they want that credit expansion to be prudent."

Jonathan Larsen, head of retail banking at Citi, adds: "I don?t like this shadow-banking system ? it?s like an unregulated mutual fund. But the likelihood of this spinning out of control is low. The banking system is well capitalized. And the good thing about China is that they understand this [shadow-banking system and imbalanced growth model] is a problem. The authorities will find the right balance between reform and growth."

China?s economic model ? top-down monetary management, artificially low interest rates and a closed financial system ? has ensured the structural growth of higher-interest-bearing products in the informal banking sector as savers seek shelter from financial repression. While global market volatility underscores the stabilizing benefits of financial protectionism, market players argue that the engineered liquidity crunch highlights how Beijing is eyeing faster-than-expected economic reforms, particularly interest rate liberalization, a prerequisite for capital-account liberalization.

Jan Dehn, head of research at emerging markets specialist Ashmore Investment Management, says: "This liquidity crisis is bullish for China reforms", citing Beijing?s growing acceptance of slower economic growth to reduce distortions, the systemic benefits of restricting credit growth to riskier borrowers and the opportunity to experiment with volatile and tighter money-market rates.

The counterpoint comes from Michael Pettis, the famed bear, who wrote last month that the political and economic cost of higher interest rates ? exposing the indiscipline of state-backed borrowers, in particular ? coupled with the new normal of diminishing returns of China?s investment-led growth, will sow the seeds of a growth crisis. Pettis, who previously argued that the growth of the shadow-banking system would reduce the likelihood of financial liberalization by underscoring the systemic risks of innovation, said: "It?s likely that the days of the super-powered Chinese economy are over. Instead, Beijing must content itself with grinding its way through the debt that has accumulated over the past decade."

Underscoring the sharply divided opinion about China?s road to reform, Bindra concludes: "The Chinese do have an understanding of what they need to do; they just need to get the timing and policy balance right. We are not worried about a credit blow-up in China. We think China does not get enough credit for its strategic successes. Will they get something wrong in this process? Probably."

Sovereign risk

Amid the liquidity concerns, China?s banking sector is now the principal source of sovereign risk, reversing a decade-long trend, according to analysts.

The markets appear to agree: CDS spreads of Chinese banks soared by an average of 79 basis points in June.

Allan Dwyer, professor of finance at Mount Royal University, Canada, says: "The central bank officials in China are still learning the game, that the policies taken in one sector of the system can have a dramatic ? and negative effect ? in other areas."

Janis H?bner, emerging markets economist at DekaBank and a Euromoney Country Risk expert reckons liquidity conditions and a more prudent monetary policy could ignite a steeper slowdown in economic growth in the longer-run. "We might see slower credit growth, especially in the shadow banking sector, and all this will weigh negatively on growth, which means we might see a steeper slowdown in growth than we expected."

Rome diverts traffic to protect Colosseum

ROME, August 3, 2013 (AFP) -- The city of Rome from Saturday barred private vehicles from using the main road to the Colosseum in order to protect the iconic monument that has been blackened by pollution and is in a poor state.

From 0300 GMT Saturday, cars, lorries and other private vehicles were barred from using the last trunk of the avenue Via dei Fori Imperiali, which links Piazza Venezia to the Roman amphitheatre.

Traffic has been diverted to an adjacent route and only public transport will be allowed on the old route.

The decision was taken by the new mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino of the leftist Democratic Party, who would like eventually to make the Via dei Fori Imperiali a pedestrian area.

The number of visitors to the Colosseum, the biggest ancient Roman amphitheatre ever built, has increased from a million to around six million a year over the past decade, thanks mainly to the 2000 blockbuster film "Gladiator".

But it has also fallen into disrepair in recent years: bits of stone, blackened by pollution, have fallen off and some experts have voiced concern that the foundations are sinking, and the amphitheatre is starting to lean.

Long-delayed repairs to the 2,000-year-old monument, funded by Italian billionaire Diego Della Valle, are in the pipeline -- but problems with red tape mean they have yet to get off the ground.

A ninth woman has accused San Diego Mayor Bob Filner of sexual harassment, Fox 5 San Diego reports:

Emily Gilbert told Fox5 that she met the mayor at a fundraiser just days after Filner took office in December. Gilbert, who is a dead ring for Marilyn Monroe, was hired to sing at a fundraising event.

?He grabbed me a little too tight, then proceeded to slide his hand down my arm and then did a little grab on my derriere,? Gilbert said. ?I didn?t want to make a scene there were kids around.?

She tried to laugh it off, but was embarrassed by the crude behavior.

Filner said last week he would undergo two weeks of therapy and would not resign his position as mayor, despite the allegations against him. Filner?s inappropriate conduct toward women reportedly traces back to his days in the U.S. House of Representatives.
